The Land of Five Towers is a positive, uplifting book, providing insights and education about Islamic life, practices, and teachings. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love the visual descriptions such as "a wolf longing for the moon" and explanations of Islamic teachings as with hadiths. I have never read a description that was so well broken down, enlightening, and educational.The Land of Five Towers
As a US reader with interests in Indonesia, The Land of Five Towers was a very eye-opening and fascinating read. The inner-battle the main character Alif has between wanting to please Amak (his mother) by attending a Muslim boarding school (pesantren), yet still dreaming about going to public high school is a story US readers and American youth can definitely relate to and draw relationships to their own life experiences. Reading the translation has been so fascinating for me because Indonesian writing style very artistic and not as sequentially fluid US fiction. I found that the artistic quality of the book is what makes the translation so beautiful and a memorable read for American readers like myself.
Negari 5 Menari, or The Land of Five Towers, is the story of one young man's pursuit of an Islamic education in an Indonesian pesantren. In reading this novel, readers gain insight about what goes on in an Islamic boarding school (Which for many, is surprisingly inspiring and insightful.) The author's real-life stories put Western reader's stereotypes and misconceptions about Islamic education to rest.
When I originally picked up this novel, I didn't know what I was getting myself into. For two days, I could be found with my nose in the yellow paperback that quickly stole my heart. As many great books do, this one takes readers through a boy's story of adversity, triumph, and dedication. But what really sets this book apart from all the rest, are the lessons that readers are guided to learn along the way. From hard-work to brotherhood, from spirituality to pursuing your dreams, there's a lesson waiting for all who read Negeri 5 Menara.

What a wonderful book this is for readers with an interest in Indonesian culture and the little understood world of pesantren (Islamic boarding school) education in Indonesia. The Land of Five Towers is inspired by the author’s educational experience at a pesantren in East Java, Pondok Modern Gontor. Alif, the main character, dreams of going to public high school in his native West Sumatra. But his deeply pious mother has other ideas she wants Alif to attend an Islamic boarding school. This launches Alif onto a long journey that takes him far away from his family, in a quest for knowledge, wisdom and spirituality. Fuadi, the author, provides a highly readable and inspiring tale of youth, disappointment, friendship, growing up, and ultimately spiritual discovery that is a lens on modern Indonesian culture and transition. A great read; I’m already looking forward to reading the English version of the second book in Fuadi’s trilogy, which should be published late this year.
What's it like to be a teenaged student at a Muslim all-boys' boarding school in Java? This guileless and wholly enjoyable narrative gives all the details of day-to-day life in a pesantren.
The protagonist is young Alif Fikri, an intelligent boy who cannot afford to go to his local government high school. So he follows his mother's suggestion to attend the Medani Pesantren, where many thousands of boys like him are offered a highly challenging exam-based education. The students are forbidden to speak Indonesian, and must quickly learn English and Arabic, the two languages of instruction at the school.
For Alif, it is a life of strict discipline, regular exam cramming, intense friendships, inspiring teachers, and daily religious worship. The boys study in depth the Koran and the works of Islamic leaders of all kinds, throughout the history of the religion. Great lessons are gradually learned in humility, the virtue of traveling the world, the power of prayer, the bonds of friendship, and the value of service to others.
Alif and his friends show the reader what it takes to persevere and succeed in such an institute. Amidst the academic lessons, there are lovely sections about taking chances at bending the rules to get supplies for a dramatic play, waiting for mail and funds to be sent from home, being generous with those less priviliged, and having a school break at the home of a more well-to-do friend.
This is a gently inspiring story that would be well-received by students of any nation or culture. I simply loved the good humor, the strength and humanity of the protagonist and his friends, and the chance to virtually visit a pesantren.
Excellent translation by Angie Kilbane keeps the novel going at a perfect pace.
This book is very popular amongst young readers in Indonesia and the translation is so enjoyable that it could really build some bridges between teens of the west and teens of the Muslim world. So this would be a super gift for that boy or girl who could stand to gain more reality and affinity with the children of Islam.
My one criticism is that the foreign terms are defined only upon first introduction in the text and there is no glossary to consult when coming upon the words later in the text. A glossary would be a wonderful addition to this and to the translations in the next two books of Fuadi's trilogy. I can hardly wait for those to come available in English.
